Under Sink Water Filter

What is an Under Sink Water Filter?

As the title suggests, this type of water filter connects to the plumbing below your sink, not to the tap. It is connected directly to the faucet below the sink that controls the water supply that is flowing through to the main sink tap. Because of its location, it is designed to filter the water supply before it reaches the tap.

This makes it more convenient to some consumers, an in particular those people who do not want to go through the trouble of having a faucet water filter. To a large extent, an under the sink water filter is to be considered a more permanent solution for the property’s water filtration system.

Installation of an Under Sink Water Filter

Despite the complexities of what these filters can do, water filters for under the sink are very straightforward to install. They simply require plumbing into the main water supply line that supplies water to the main sink tap. If you are a DIY enthusiast you will likely be able to do the installation quite easily yourself without professional.

Types of Under Sink Water Filters

There is some diversity in the design and action of these water filters. Most of them are designed to just filter out the sediments present in the water supply and make it clear for drinking. These are the crudest and the cheapest forms of water filters.

In some more sophisticated water filter designs, there are biological filters added to the systems. These can also trap the microorganisms that may be present in the water supply.

Some of the filters also have chlorine filters already attached to them for the purpose of removing the chlorine odor that is a common complaint related to ordinary tap water.

Essentially, there are different types of sink water filters to choose from and they can be simple or sophisticated.

Usage of the Under Sink Water Filters

The main filtration activity of the under the sink water filter is localized in what’s called a cartridge… or cartridges if the filtration is a more sophisticated and multilevel process.

The cartridge traps the all the sediments, microorganisms, and chemicals according to its filtration process level. However, be aware that the cartridge will need to be replaced periodically. The longevity of the cartridge will depend on the type as they do vary.

Water Supply Purposes

There are different options for how you get your water that is purified in under sink water filters. You can either; have the filtered water flowing out of the same tap that is used for the sink, or have a separate tap installed.

When a separate tap is installed, this tap will become the tap dedicated just for your drinking water. Having this type of filter installed will save on the life of the cartridge. You can use the filtered water for drinking and the other main tap will provide the non-filtered water for things like washing. However, if you have a small sink this type of installation may not be possible.
