What is a Sediment Water Filter?

The water that we get piped into our homes is full of a variety of sedimentary materials. These sediments can often be seen floating around in the water, or they can be seen when you leave a glass of water to stand as they settle down to the bottom when it has been kept standing for a long time. Some of these types of sediments can cause chemical reactions. A good example of that is the changing of the colour of toilet bowls, sinks and bathtubs, when they have been in contact with flowing tap water regularly or for a long period of time. Also, these sediments can clog up the faucets and sometimes even the plumbing pipes. This is proof enough to demonstrate the fact that sediments are definitely present in the water supply that we consider being clean water. A sediment type water filter is used to remove them.

Types of Sediments

There are many kinds of sediments that are present in the water supplies that reach our homes. One of the most common of these sediments is rust. Rust is introduced into water due to the very pipes that transport it to our taps.

Since water has to pass through the pipes to reach our homes, even after it has undergone municipal treatment, the chances of rust being present in the water are really quite high. Also, water contains sand and numerous organic materials. A good sediment filter will remove all these impurities.

How does a Sediment Water Filter work?

Sediment water filters are termed point-of-use filters. These filters are designed to trap the sediments when as they move out of the tap. They are easily attachable directly onto the taps themselves, and require no special plumbing expertise or arrangements.

The sediment filters will contain a device that will physically trap the sedimentary materials from entering into the water. This may be a membranous film, or it could be a layer of closely packed filtering material. When water passes through this filtering material it traps the sediments, and the supernatant water that flows out of them is relatively purer than it would be without passing through this filtering system.

However, it must be remembered that sediment type water filters do not remove chemicals such as chlorine from the water; they are purely for removing sediments.

Types of Sediment Water Filter

There are two main types of sediment filters and this is based on their make. These are; the cartridge water filter and the bag water filter.

The cartridge water filters need replacing when the cartridge is clogged with sediments and particles.

Bag water filters won’t need replacement because it is possible to wash them through to remove the sediments trapped and causing the clogging. Cartridge water filters are better suited for household water purposes while the bag water filters are designed for use in industries.
