What is a Sand Water Filter?
A sand water filters are exactly what they sound like, water filters that contain sand that works as the filtering material. The sand in the filter is closely packed and the water is forced to flow through the filter. As the water flows through the sand, most sediment particles that are present in the water are thereby trapped by the sand filter. The filtered water is then purer than it was prior to filtering. Sand is also classified as a mild adsorbent. Hence, when water passes through a sand water filter, it will also result in being organically purer. Sand will absorb some of the organic odors that may be present in your water supply and the result will be water that is cleaner and more potable.
The problem is… that sand water supply filters are not that efficient at all. Water filters that use only sand as the filtering material; this can lead to actually creating more problems than it solves. Minute sand particles can pass on in the water. Although care is taken to ensure to select particles of a larger size for the filters, the sand can also suffer from weathering of with the result of producing smaller sand particles within the filter which will then flow with the consumed supernatant water. Also, we must not discount the potential of microorganisms being present within the sand, microorganisms that can make the water dangerous to consume.
The water consumed today is laden with much more than merely natural organic material. It has a variety of chemical substances such as Chlorine and leads to name just two, and it has various materials in it that come from decomposing wastes. It includes pesticides and insecticides that are used in farming and it can contain waste from commercial industries. With these complex materials being present in our water supplies, we cannot hope that a sand type water filter will be completely effective. These simpler water filters cannot remove such things and for this reason a sand filter cannot be relied on to make the water potable.
However, this type of water filter is very good at removing the organic wastes from the water. But since water does not contain just organic wastes, sand filters cannot be used for household filtering purposes. Additionally, it is necessary to pass the water supply through a sand filter very slowly. If the rate of flow of water is higher, such as when you have the tap running quite fast, the water will not be filtered at all.
Sand water filtering can be used in places where clean water is required but not if it is needed for drinking. An example of this requirement would be water for a swimming pool, or water that is required for gardening purposes. If these filters are used for drinking, they will need to be supplemented with an additional filter of another type which can efficiently remove the all the chemical substances that may be present in the water.
