Household Water Filter

What is a Household Water Filter?

A water filter that is used at the whole household level has several tasks to perform when you are considering the variety of impurities that are present in domestic water supplies. Though there may be a treatment of the domestic water supply before it reaches homes, at the municipal level, the methods are either not sufficient enough to have treated all the impurities present in our supplies of water, or there are impurities that get into the water after the water treatment has been done. An example of this can be seen in the evidence of rust that accumulates in water even following water treatment because it has to travel through so many water pipes before finally reaching our homes.

Why is a Household Water Filter Necessary?

Household water filtration systems are absolute necessities considering the kinds of materials that are present in the water we consume. There are varieties of biological impurities in it such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, algae cysts and some organic matter too. Even the bacterium Escherichia coli which are what causes severe digestive problems are present in the water supply that is available in many parts of the world.

Then on top of that there are chemical impurities. The most dangerous of these chemicals is lead. If lead particles are present in your water, it can lead to causing learning disabilities in children.

Chlorine, which is added at the point of water treatment by the authorities, can also become an impurity. Chlorine gives water an unpleasant odor and flavor. Recently, attention has finally started to be given to the toxic and carcinogenic properties of Chlorine.

What Kinds of Household Water Filters are used?

The most commonly used household water filters are the sink filters. These sink filters are designed to connect to the taps on sinks directly. No plumbing modifications are needed; the sink water filters are connected with a simple attaching mechanism.

Sink water filters clean the water as it passes through them, and so they are termed ‘point-of-use’ water filters. The main advantage to using sink water filters is that they are the cheaper types of filters, they are quite easily fixed in place and easy to remove, they are also easily cleaned or replaced, and are very effective in purifying water and making it more suitable for drinking and cooking purposes.

Filter Types

Sink water filters are available in basically of two types, those with cartridge filters and those with bag filters.

The cartridge filters have a lifespan and replacement cartridges that you periodically replace the old cartridge with. After a particular length of use, the cartridges will get clogged up with particles and sediment and need to be replaced. Replacement cartridges are easily available and when you buy your filter you will get instructions on the specific cartridge for that brand of filter. Attaching the cartridges in the filtration system does not require any particular expertise and is quite straightforward.

The other kind is the bag filter. This one has been designed around a bag like arrangement that filters out the sediments and other impurities from the water. However, the bag type sink water filters are not recommended for household filter system purposes.
