Benefits of Lutein

Maintaining your vision with the benefits of Lutein vitamins supplements

Have you heard of how you can benefit from taking Lutein supplements? If you haven’t you may be interested in learning more about it and how Lutein can help keep your eyes healthy. This article will outline what Lutein is, how your eye health will benefit from it, the best way to get Lutein into your diet, and some of the research into Lutein.

First of all, what exactly is Lutein? Lutein is a carotenoid that occurs naturally in vegetables and fruit. Lutein is what gives a lot of plants, and food, a vibrant colour.

Protect Eyes with Lutein

How is it that you can protect your vision by supplementing your diet with Lutein? Lutein is also present in the macula of the retina. The macula is the part that is responsible for central vision. Damage to the macula is one of the main causes of problems with vision, including blindness. This carotenoid is present in your macula and benefits of Lutein are in protecting your eyes from damage such as that caused by the rays of the sun and oxidation.

The Effects of Aging

The trouble is, as we age, our eyes start to lose their colour, clarity and other symptoms such as dots; blurry cloudy vision starts to become more evident. These types of symptoms may well be the beginning of serious conditions such as cataracts or Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). It is therefore important that we make sure we are getting a supply of nutritional foods or supplements specific for our eye health to make sure our defense against various eye conditions is strengthened.

Food Sources of Lutein

Lutein is present in foods and the majority of it can be found in green and leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, lettuce, and turnip. The benefits of Lutein can also be gained from other fruit and vegetables such as oranges, corn, and egg yolk. Although it is present in these foods most people will only consume 1-2 mg of Lutein per day when ideally we should intake something like 4-8 mg per day.

You may be wondering if we have to consume large amounts of vegetables and fruit that contain Lutein? The answer would be, not really. Although it is recommended that you get your intake of vitamins and minerals from fresh and natural foods, it is unlikely that you will be able to judge if you have had the correct amount or not.

Apart from that we all lead such a hectic lifestyle these days that it is hard to find the time to be conscious of your diet every day. It is suggested to supplement your intake through fresh food with Lutein in supplement form. You can get the required amount of Lutein dosage by taking it in a supplementary and Lutein enriched multi-vitamin.

Supplements

A high quality supplement will include additional nutrients for eyes. Zeaxanthin for example, also is a cartenoid providing macula defense, and bilberry extract. A dose may be from 3mg up to 10mg.

Be aware that some formulas only include trace amounts of these essential cartenoids. Be sure to read the label properly and do not mistake mg for mcg. There are 100 mcgs in 1 mg! A mistake I made once was thinking it said 100mg when in fact it was just 1mg. To get the benefits of Lutein the supplement needs to contain suffient levels.

Research

It has been scientifically proven that including Lutein in your diet through supplementation of your food intake fights off eye disease such as Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and cataracts.

Research has followed more than seventy thousand subjects that consumed high amounts of eye supporting nutrients compared to those who didn’t consume very much at all. It was discovered that those people consuming higher amounts had far less problems related to their vision, rarely showed signs of macular degeneration, and had a lower risk of developing cateracts.

The above should provide enough proof of the benefits of Lutein, and that if you include these nutrients as part of your daily vitamins and supplements intake your vision will at least be less likely to degenerate as fast through the aging process.

Important Note

There are a complex numbers of factors involved here, and deciding to use the wrong supplement may potentially have detrimental effects on the health of you and your eyes. Be educated in your decisions and you must always discuss your ideas with a qualified doctor. Only look to using supplements when you are not able to get what you need from your diet.
